This author does her research (or at least makes it sound like she did).
Deafening takes place in southern Ontario during World War I. Grania became deaf when she was 5 as a result of Scarlet Fever, and when she is 9 is sent to Belleville School for the Deaf, leaving her life behind. Later in life, she meets Jim, a hearing man. Weeks after they get married, Jim goes off to war to be a stretcher bearer. For 3 years.
(I did like Deafening, but found it a bit slow. Amazing to think of how people lived through the wars though!)
Remembering the Bones is a stream-of-conciousness story of Georgie's life, a soon-to-be-eighty year old on her way to Buckingham Palace for lunch with the Queen on their shared birthday. On her way to the airport, actually, not 10 minutes from home, a moment of distraction sends Georgie & her car into a ravine. Laying there injured, and trying to get to the car, Georgie's memories force her to wonder what her life is really worth.

Good reading memories from the summertime. I loved those books. Glad you got the chance to read them too.

i've got such a huge list of books to read, but i'm glad it keeps getting longer. i love the anticipation of having great books to look forward to.
