As recommended by Julie. I found this book quite fascinating - it's the story of a man who has saved all his life to retire to someplace tropical and cheap, with not too many other American's around. On the eve of his departure, his wife informs him that she has a very rare and terminal cancer. This book essentially asks the question: How much is a human life worth? Does Shepherd (that's the husband) pursue his lifelong dream of moving away to do nothing, or does he spare no expense in prolonging his wife's inevitable demise?
At first, I had to really pay attention to the writing in this book - Julie is right, it is brilliantly written!
Also recommended from Julie, by the same author: "We have to talk about Kevin" and "The Post Birthday World"
